Raising A Reader (2022-2023, 2020-2021)

Raising A Reader is a national, evidence-based parent-engagement and book distribution program proven to improve reading readiness and reading proficiency of young children. The program is based on three program activities that help children and families develop, practice and sustain positive book sharing habits at home. Program activities include:

1. Using a train-the-trainer model to educate parents on evidence-based practices that support book sharing at home,

2. Rotating book bags among children each week (each bag includes 4 new bilingual books), and

3. Connecting children and families to local libraries.

United Way of the Desert is the only licensed and trained affiliate implementing Raising A Reader locally, and currently serves 2800 children, 0-6 years old, annually across 36 school sites in the Coachella Valley. At United Way of the Desert, we believe that Raising A Reader will provide our most disadvantaged children the literacy resources and opportunities necessary to thrive and achieve long-term academic and life success. Evaluation of program outcomes show Raising A Reader is successful in improving child reading readiness and family reading behaviors with a 36% increase in family reading routines, 25% increase in child book interest, 46% increase in time devoted to book sharing, and 44% increase in frequency of book sharing.
