All Kids Ride (2023-2024)

The All Kids Ride Kindergarten PE Program helps students develop physically and mentally, gives them greater confidence, reduces stress, and provides better focus, giving students an opportunity to develop a life klong physical activity skill and enabling students to be more active, providing a resource to reduce childhood obesity and other diseases associated with being overweight. A class set of push to pedal conversion bikes and helmets, along with a set curriculum, will be purchased and used to teach kindergartens how to ride a bike using a standards based curriculum, during their physical education class. Students will be taught a set curriculum that starts off in lessons 1 through 6 learning how to walk, balance, and stride. In lessons 7 and 8, the bikes are converted to pedal mode and students learn how to pedal. The bikes will be available for students to use and practice the skills learned during their physical education class, during recess, lunch, and in the after school program. The goal is to have all students enrolled in Kindergarten at Roosevelt, developing a lifelong physical activity skill, by being able to ride a bicycle without training wheels by the end of the program.

Building a Sustainable Future (2021-2022)

Roosevelt Elementary School recently received the United States Department of Education’s Green Ribbon School Award for environmental sustainability practices and environmental science program for students. The program started in the 2018 school year, when we received funding to start up a STEM program on campus, through the kindness of the Anderson Grant Foundation. This program gave classroom teachers access to environmental education kits in all grade levels. We continued to improve our STEM program over the past few years, building on what we began with in 2018. As our program developed we connected with the Green Schools Council in Washington D.C. and have been accepted to work in their first ever cohort to bring project based learning through green school’s platform into our school. This project will help support students' hands on learning and the curriculum provided by the Building Learners to allow the students to have access to resources to conduct hands-on experiments to understand the carbon footprint of our school building and school community. Students will get uses materials from this grant to collect and track their school’s water, energy, waste, transportation, and environmental health data using the Arc platform..Students will participate in hands-on and project-based learning experiences, data analysis and practical problem-solving skills, exposure to green careers, and make connections within the community by working with our green building professionals. The materials from this grant will allow kids to test drink water, monitor air quality, explore renewable energy sources, build renewable energy source models and test them, vist local agencies that will further their knowledge on environmental conservation and awareness of local entities that support environmental conservation. The project will allow students to have and experience real world applications to make a difference not only in our school, but in the community and to the environment. Students will learn how to be social conscious individuals, who are able to make informed decisions about their own carbon footprint and gain confidence to be active supporters in the school and community to strengthen the support for environmentally conscious decision making. Students will use the information and knowledge they have gained through the use of materials supplies, and educational opportunities provided through funding from the Anderson Children’s Foundation to be young leaders and provide informed, data driven information to local school and city leaders, learning that at their age they are able to make positive changes in this world.

Environmental STEM (2018-2019)

Roosevelt Elementary School, is located on the border of Indio and Coachella. 100% of our students live at or below the poverty level, residing in subsidized housing units or living at one of two local homeless shelters near the school. Currently we have no students enrolled in school, that have parents who have earned a college degree. The generational poverty cycle, is prevalent in our school community. Roosevelt has made a commitment to create a strong educational foundation for our students, promote academic successes, and provide them with opportunities that will lead them on a path towards higher education endeavors. With this project, we will use the funds to purchase Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Kits for each grade level, that have a focus on environmental impact. Each kits contains modules that provide students with high interest, engaging, educational experiences that will help our students learn skills through real world experiences and foster their interest in academic learning and higher education pursuits, while learning about taking care of our environment and the planet, in which we live. By incorporating Environmental Sustainability, through Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering (STEM) curriculum, into our regular instruction, students will be able to engage curriculum, that provides them in 21st Century Skills and promote interest in academic success and higher education possibilities.
