Social Emotional Learning Program (2024-2025)

The importance of social emotional learning has been growing recently. Both educators and parents want students to have positive experiences while at school. Our district has taken an enormous interest in social emotional learning in the recent years. Our hope and aim are for students to be happy, have caring and supportive interpersonal relationships, demonstrate empathy and care for others, and make responsible decisions. In our school, we want to encourage and implement social emotional learning as much as possible and see the benefits flourish. We hope to better our attendance, decrease disruptive behavior, decrease suspension, and for students to enjoy school more. We strongly feel that introducing a sensory space will help our students tremendously; not just academically, but in their overall well-being.

Our program aims to integrate social emotional learning as part of the school environment. We want to designate a safe space for students who encounter emotional and/or behavioral challenges. This space will be designed to teach students how to cope with everyday stress, increase prosocial behavior (kindness, sharing, empathy), make responsible and caring decisions; as well as improve student attitude towards school. Through social emotional teaching we aim to increase academic performance, healthy relationships, and mental wellness. Specifically, we want to create a sensory space for students and provide them with a tranquil space where they can retreat from the sensory overload of the school environment. This will help with reducing stress, anxiety and behavioral difficulties. A sensory space will be of benefit to all of our student population, but especially our special education students who need additional support.

STEAM and Robotics Classroom (2019-2020, 2017-2018, 2016-2017, 2015-2016)

Oasis Elementary is a leader at improving all students with access to STEAM Subjects. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) We do this by offering the students a STEAM and Robotic classroom programs. The idea is to inspire and provide students with the resources, education, and life skills that will open doors to future scholarships and lead to opportunities as competitive industry professionals in a global economy. This is a ground breaking learning experience in STEAM using Robotics. The project uses Lego Mindstorms Robotics kits, NXT software, computers, technology, and various robotics-building materials. This classroom will be the first of its kind to involve students using STEAM in the development, building and programming of a multiple robots. Students will work hands-on in teams to design; build, and program robots. They will use technology to document their progress through the year.

In the 2016-2017 school year, Oasis Elementary School will focus more prominently on Quest-Based Learning. This model focuses on an individualized and flexible curricular experience in which students can select activities, called quests, rather than more traditionally-structured assignments. Students leverage choice to promote engagement rather than waiting for a due date. Quests can contain any combination of text, media, or experience and culminate with a practical artifact like a paper, speech, video, or project. This learning style revolutionizes the core curriculum, helps students engage with technology, and is proven to improve grades as well as student/teacher interactions. This leads to higher test scores, better school attendance, and brighter futures for students.
