Literacy Project

Reading Alert! (2023-2024)

The Literacy Project is proud to have been selected for the 2023-2024 grant cycle funding. TLP's no-cost reading intervention, Reading Alert! increases literacy promotion, reading motivation, and self-esteem for low-income second and third-grade students.

We are partnering with three Title 1 schools in the East Coachella area with the confidence of significantly improving reading skills of 200 second and third-grade students who have fallen behind in grade-level reading. To achieve this, six students will be selected to participate in The New Phonics Game™ for 30 sessions every six weeks during the school year. A Master Teacher will facilitate the game format, which includes 13 games that focus on five essential reading components: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Through this program, students are exposed to all three different learning modalities- auditory, visual, and tactile. This makes the reading game socially interactive, fun, and highly effective. The curriculum aligns with California state standards to ensure students master classroom expectations. In addition to gaining a foundational reading skill, students receive a certificate of achievement, books, and "The New Phonics Game™" to foster family literacy.

Reading Initiative (2020-2021, 2018-2019)

The Literacy Project eliminates the literacy gap of emerging 2nd-graders who are functionally illiterate by boosting reading achievement. Without early intervention, students are less likely ever to become grade-level readers and four times less likely not to finish high school, resulting in a poor academic, social, and civic future. It is our hope that every second grade student is given the chance to have a solid foundation of English skills to advance their literacy development. This critical age, referred to as "the literacy gap," is when a child becomes equipped with literacy skill that last a lifetime.

TLP offers a comprehensive instructional program that improves both academic and attitudinal levels of students performing well below English proficiency standards. The academic segment utilizes a reading game, which was co-developed by The Regents of the University of California. Aligned with Common Core and collaborative learning methods, TLP conducts 30 one-hour sessions, five days a week, during a six-week program cycle during daytime instruction to groups of up to six children. We conduct three cycles of teaching each school year: Fall (September - November), Winter (January - March), and Spring, (April - June). The program is administered by TLP's Master Teachers who are highly credentialed as reading and language arts specialists. The program is provided at "no cost" to both the school and at-risk students in the second grade. The program teaches the fundamental principles of phonics and literacy in all three learning modalities-auditory, visual and tactile-critical to children with varying learning styles.

We partner with six schools in Mecca, Coachella Valley, Thermal, and the Salton Sea, where our Master Teachers use The New Phonics Game™ learning tool to target five essential reading components. As a result of individualized instruction, under-served students gain critical reading skills, better self-esteem, and become proud, confident learners ready for success. Proud graduates of The Literacy Project’s reading program gain measurable, significant reading skills over a 30-hour program (76% to 129%) ensuring academic success, which results in increased self-confidence.
